HIV can be transmitted from an infected person to another through blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk.  This may occur through unprotected sexual intercourse; sharing injection needles, syringes, and other body piercing instruments (i.e. tattoo needles, acupuncture equipment); direct contact with blood and blood products; and from an infected mother to her child during pregnancy, birth, and through breast feeding.  Fluids that do not transmit HIV include saliva, tears, urine, and sweat.  You cannot get HIV from kissing, holding hands, sharing cutlery, public washrooms, mosquito bites, using the public telephone, swimming pools, and shaking hands
