Condoms :
Condoms can protect you from pregnancy and most STI's, especially HIV/AIDS, if used properly. If you are sexually active, it is important to always have condoms on you and have them close by. That way, in the heat of the moment, you do not have to disrupt sexual activity to go buy some or look for them. You can get free condoms from any Sexual Health Centre as well as ASAAP. Condoms can be used for oral, vaginal or anal sex.
These are the following steps involved in using a condom.
1. Always check the expiry date. Every condom should have one. And do not use it if the expiry date has passed.
2.
Do not keep in warm/hot areas (such as your back pocket) as this temperature can weaken the condom
3.
Always use a latex condom because this material prevents infections from passing through the condom barrier
4. Be careful not to tear the condom when opening or putting it on
5.
If you are uncircumcised, remember to pull your foreskin back before putting on the condom
6.
It is important to squeeze out the air at the tip of the condom before putting it on
7.
When putting the condom on, do not cover the entire penis with the entire condom, leave half an inch of the condom at the tip of the penis so that there is space where the semen can go
8. Unroll the condom right to the bottom of the penis
9.
If you use a lubricant, make sure it is water soluble. Vaseline, oils and other petroleum products can weaken the condom.
10.
After ejaculation, withdraw the penis before it loses erection completely and hold the condom so that it does not slip off while you pull it out. This will help to avoid spillage.
Female Condom :
There are now condoms for women. These are also available free at ASAAP. They are made out of a thick plastic (polyurethane) and shaped like a tube which has both an inner and outer ring.
1.
Insert by squeezing the inner ring. The inner ring is inserted inside the vagina. The outer ring is left just outside the vaginal opening, covering the vulva
2.
The condom is already lubricated but you can add some drops inside the condom
3.
Do not use a male condom at the same time, this may cause both condoms to slip off due to friction
4.
Since female condoms also cover the vulva, they may offer better protection against certain STI’s. Also some women prefer the female condom because it gives them more control over safer sex.
